At 8 am on Monday, August 30, 1976, Milagros left her home at 21-47 55th Street, Astoria, Queens, dressed in black trousers, and a black blouse with a pink rose print. She traveled by subway to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. At 9 am Milagros attended an appointment at NYS Labor Department located on South 5th Street between Marcy and Havemeyer in Brooklyn, NY. Between 10 – 11 am Milagros was expected to visit her brother and sister-in-law at 376 Keap Street, between South 2nd and 3rd in Brooklyn. Milagros had called her sister-in-law the previous afternoon to confirm her visit, stating "leave me the dirty laundry for me to wash" referring to cloth diapers. She never arrived. As the hours passed and there was no sign of her, worried family members organized search parties. They visited two precincts to report her missing.
