Donald Darigan was last seen on December 30, 1945, rabbit hunting with his two brothers north of Gorton Pond in Warwick. Donald was having trouble walking in the snow, so his older brothers told him to head back to the road and they would join him. When Donald's brothers hiked out of the woods about 10 minutes later, Donald had disappeared. The brothers returned home thinking he had returned on his own. Failing to find him at home, the two brothers returned to the swamp. They followed Donald's tracks to Trinity Street but lost them in the slush on the road. Authorities immediately launched what, for that time, would become one of the most intensive missing persons searches in the state's history. A couple days later, a 16-year-old girl told authorities she had seen a boy matching Donald's description come out of Trinity Street. The boy said he was lost and asked for directions to "Seal Street, " which searchers interpreted to mean Lucile Street, where he lived. The girl said she then walked with the boy east along Main Avenue to the Greenwood train bridge at Post Road, where she hopped on a bus to Providence. Donald's parents said he would have known how to get back home from there. In 1949, a 17-year-old boy reported seeing a small skeleton miles away off Cedar Swamp Road. The boy said he was trout fishing in the woods when he came upon a skeleton. At the time, he told a reporter he had seen "the whole skeleton" and that he lifted the remains of a hat from the skull and put it back. Then he picked up a boot to show as proof that he had "found something. " But he told police that he became frightened when he saw a man and hid the boot in a depression. When he brought searchers back to the area, they could find only the boot, not the skeleton.
