William Martin was last seen August 10, 1957. In the early afternoon, William and his younger brother were playing on the front porch. William began bumping his tricycle into his younger brother. The brother went inside to tell on him and when their mother came outside, William was gone. When questioned by police, a boarder at the Martin home (and boyfriend of William's Aunt), stated after William and his younger brother got into an argument over the tricycle incident, he walked William down the driveway to look at a neighbor's dog. He then returned to the Martin house without William. The boarder told William's mother he was going to drive his car out to a farm to wash it. He returned to the Martin's house 2 hours later. At that time, the boarder became aware of William's disappearance from William's mother. The boarder told her that as he was driving away to wash the car, he saw William about 2 blocks from the house. He said William had nearly run into the path of his car, and he warned William to go home. The boarder took numerous polygraph tests, and no charges were ever filed. William's parents insisted he was not involved. Nearby ponds and water-filled coal mine pits were drained, a carnival that had been in town during the weekend of his disappearance was tracked down and workers were interviewed, and numerous leads were investigated, but no sign of William was found. Foul play is suspected.
