Michael disappeared while playing at Colonel Summers Park located at Southeast 17th Avenue and Taylor Street at some point between 6pm - 7pm that evening. In May 1982 a man was convicted of killing Michael and disposing of his body in a garbage bin. The bin was later dumped at a landfill, but searches have not been successful in finding Michael's body.
