Circumstances
Edwina Onyango emigrated to the United States from Kenya in 1998 and settled in the Allentown, PA area where she met Ernest Troy Freeby. They married on March 20, 2001, but Freeby told police it was a marriage of convenience for Onyango to be able to get a green card so that she could work and he could get his children out of foster care. After marrying Onyango, Freeby had a girlfriend, with whom he had three children. At some point, Freeby moved to Lansford and Onyango stayed with, and cared for, an elderly Bethlehem couple. The last time anyone heard from Onyango was Dec. 9, 2007, when she left a phone message for her sister that she was going to Freeby's home in Lansford to pick something up and would call her later. When her siblings hadn’t heard from her, they alerted Lansford police on Dec. 17, 2007. State police took over the investigation on Dec. 26 and searched Freeby’s home three weeks later. Onyango's car was found at Freeby's home, and a trail of blood was found in his basement. The blood went down the basement steps and into the coal bin. DNA tests proved that the blood was Oryango's. Investigators stated the evidence indicated Onyango sustained "substantial" injuries at someplace other than the basement. Someone had tried to clean up by painting over the stains. Freeby was convicted of first degree murder in January, 2012.
