Elvin and his father worked together at their family landscaping business. Elvin's father last saw his son at the end of their workday and they planned to meet up the next morning as usual. Elvin didn't show up for work the next morning and his family has not seen him since his disappearance. Weeks later, police discovered Elvin's truck had been abandoned at a parking lot at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and towed away. A store receipt found in the truck confirmed on the day of Elvin's disappearance he had gone to J. C. Penney after work and exchanged a pair of jeans. There is no record of where Elvin went after that. After Elvin's disappearance, someone tried cashing some of his personal checks. The checks bounced and investigators were unable to find the person who tried cashing them. Elvin's family has had Elvin declared legally dead. Foul play is suspected.
