Circumstances
Quang Than, a 66-year-old male from Huntington Beach, CA, separated from his hiking group at the base of the ascent to Split Mountain. Than waited at the bottom of the approach to the summit (coordinates for approximate point last seen: 37. 025776°, -118. 422293°) while his two hiking partners attempted the summit. Than was visible to his hiking partners most of the way to the summit, although they lost sight of him for about 20 minutes. One hiking partner observed Than stand up and begin wandering down in the direction of the Tinemaha Creek drainage. Upon returning Than's last known location, his hiking group could not find him. Than's hiking party were unable to locate any sign of him on their return hike. Than's gear cache was untouched near Red Lake. An exhaustive multi-agency search including Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park and Inyo County could not locate and signs of Than.
