Description

Kelly Smith was visiting the Oregon coast for the first time with 5 friends on April 16, 2016. He and another friend climbed out onto the rocks beyond the viewpoint to take photos closer to the water. A sneaker wave struck from behind and pulled Smith into the ocean. The rough surf prevented Smith from climbing to safety. Emergency responders were able to see him in the water for about 7 minutes before he sunk into the water.
