Description

On or about 7 Dec 63, Haynes departed Baltimore, MD and started hitchhiking to Maben, West Virginia to visit his parents. Haynes was reportedly driven from Baltimore, MD to the intersection of Highways 40 and 340 near Frederick, MD, by his brother-in-law. He left his brother-in-law's vehicle at approximately 0600, 7 Dec 63, at which time he was wearing his Class "A" (Army Green) uniform. He had been carrying a suitcase, and had approximately $8. 00 in his possession. A witness reported to the West Virginia State Police that during the early hours of 7 Dec 63, she had picked up a hitchhiking soldier near Frederick, MD, and drove him to the intersection of US Highway 21 and West Virginia Highway 61, Oak Hill, WV, letting him out of her vehicle about 1400-1500 hours. The soldier who obtained a ride stated his name was "Haynes" and he was enroute to visit his parents in Maben, WV (Oak Hill is approximately 49 miles from Maben, WV). Haynes has not been seen or heard from since 7 Dec 63. All efforts by Army CID, West Virginia State Police, and local civil authorities met with negative efforts in locating Haynes. There were no indications that Haynes had deserted the U. S. Army. Foul play is suspected.
