Hegwood was last seen on March 20, 1980, leaving the Townhouse Lounge in downtown Hattiesburg. He left the lough at about 9:30 or 10 p. m. to go home, where he was going to meet his date. His car was involved in a minor hit-and-run accident. It is unclear if Jeffrey was the driver at the time of the accident. His car was found abandoned the next day on Short Katie St,.
